Malandain Ballet Biarritz — is a renown neoclassical ballet company and one of the few French ballet companies, which has the status of a national ballet company. It produces one premiere a year, but each of the productions withstands over 100 performances.

Its incontestable leader, choreographer, Thierry Malandain explains his approach to working with original source I'm not an innovator but more a renovator, if that's the right word. I take ballets from the past, and sort of play about with them, taking the music and the qualities of my dancers as a guide. I don’t want to sound overconfident, but I aim to bring something of my own, to prevent the classic dance from becoming obsoleting.

La Pastorale was premiered in December 2019, but seems to be very relevant. “There're, somewhere, the simple life and light” – cites Colta.ru the poem of Anna Akhmatova in Sofia Dymova’ in blog when telling about this production. “It’s only in the first part the characters are wandering in dark labyrinth (seems very impressively: the corps of metallic bars and beams against the corps de ballet alive. We are all closed in our own space and we need to deal with our own demona and not to destroy the world around us.

Malandain refers to Beethoven: the ballet is based on his Sixth Symphone (Pastoral), fragments from The Ruins of Athens piece and cantata Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage.

And final is composed in the spirit of Beethoven . “The stage is illuminated with bright light , all dancers are uniting in concertic round and bless the nature — a pacifist pathos of Maurice Béjart and his Ninth Symphony”. The harmony can be achieved through uniting with other persons and nature…
