In 2012, Maxim Petrov graduated from the Vaganova Russian Ballet Academy (class of Professor Gennadiy Selyutskiy). From 2012 to 2023, he was a dancer at the Mariinsky Theatre. He has been working as a choreographer since 2014, and his works have entered the repertoires of the Mariinsky Theatre, Atlanta Ballet, and the
opera theatres of Ekaterinburg, Samara, Nizhniy Novgorod, and Tashkent. He has worked as a choreographer and a director of movement for operas at the Mariinsky, the Bolshoi Theatre, and Ural Opera, working with the directors Graham Vick, Yannis Kokkos, and Dmitriy Volkostrelov. He was the co-creator of the productions DJ Pavel and Two Rings at teatre post. He directed Stravinsky’s Renard. Mavra. The Fairy’s Kiss at the Mariinsky and Bellini’s Norma at Perm Opera.
He was awarded the Golden Mask National Theatre Award for Best Choreography for the ballet Russian Dead Ends – II (2021) and the Golden Scoop St. Petetrsburg Higher Theatre Prize (2022).
Since 2023, he has been the artistic director and chief ballet master at Ural Ballet.
